¿Qué es Zinc?

Zinc is an essential trace mineral involved in over 300 enzymatic reactions and more than 1,000 transcription factors in the human body. It is critical for immune function, wound healing, DNA synthesis, protein production, cell division, and sensory functions including taste and smell. The body contains approximately 2–3 grams of zinc, with the highest concentrations in the prostate, eyes, brain, muscle, bone, and liver. Causas comunes

High zinc intake stimulates the production of metallothionein in intestinal cells, which preferentially binds copper and prevents its absorption, leading to copper deficiency. This is why chronic zinc supplementation above 40 mg/day can cause copper deficiency, resulting in anemia, neutropenia, and neurological problems. When supplementing zinc long-term, monitoring copper levels and considering a small copper supplement (1–2 mg/day) is advisable.
